In our experiment we encountered one video that was blocked and two videos that were immediately removed by the user.
The videos uploaded on March 09, 2011 from 12:30pm – 10:30pm mostly fell under the categories of Entertainment, Gaming, and Music. We saw that a lot of people are uploading videos about the current popular video games that we have. There were a lot of tutorials regarding how to do a certain cheat on the game, or some just wanted to brag about how good they did on a certain game, others showed how to download fake games for PS3 or how to crack games. From our time frame, there were only 14 videos recorded to have this kind of trend but looking beyond the time frame we had, there are actually a whole lot more of uploads with this trend. We can see that people really use YouTube to share information; especially with video games. A lot of people are into this stuff and everyone is trying to find ways how to make their gaming experience more worthwhile. Another trend that we noticed is that people are uploading videos of their own personal moments. They would usually take videos of themselves hanging out with their friends or of them just having fun dancing around or singing. The videos that fell under the category entertainment had this kind of trend. People just trying to treasure the great moments they have and their “treasure chest” is YouTube. Related to this, some people also post videos of their own musical compositions, or their own renditions of certain songs, or even maybe their personalized music video of a popular song. These videos fall under the music category but the trend we can see is this about the personal moments of the uploader.
Most of the video uploads contained personal experiences of the users. We can see them singing to their favorite songs or dancing around their room or maybe just fooling around and having fun with their friends. YouTube has become a platform for people to store all their videos regardless of its importance to other people. Maybe some videos may just look so funny or so useless to us, but to those who uploaded it, it actually means something to them. We can find so many videos on YouTube about this, people just having fun. Relating this to Michael Wesch’s speech regarding YouTube video uploads, his words are still applicable to today’s trends on YouTube. People still upload videos of their personal experiences.
Aside from this, YouTube has also been a platform for people to learn a lot of things. Users have also started uploading tutorials of just about everything we want to learn about. YouTube has been a good tool for E-Learning because it is very accessible to almost everyone in the world. Tutorials on YouTube are actually very effective because it’s not just pictures, it’s just not words, it is actually both. Words and pictures/videos are used together, simultaneously, to further explain certain topics.
